Sunbridge Hills Conversation Area

Hiking, Biking

Sunbridge Hills Conservation Area sits quietly on the north edge of St. Joseph, offering one of the best local escapes into the woods without ever leaving the city. Though technically part of the Caroline Sheridan Logan Memorial Wildlife Area, most folks just call the whole place “Sunbridge.” The two main trails—Logan’s Run and Lanowa—twist through both properties with a mix of steep climbs, fast descents, and wooded switchbacks that draw in hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners alike. River valley overlooks, soaring hawks, and the occasional deer sighting give this place the kind of wild, just-out-of-town energy that’s hard to beat.

The trail system links up with River Bluff Trails Park, expanding your options for mileage and exploration. Keep your eyes peeled for the Liliger Family Cemetery (often called “Felix’s Grave” even though no one named Felix is buried there)—a secluded, historic spot that adds a bit of local lore to the adventure. With solid maintenance, varied terrain, and quick access from anywhere in town, Sunbridge delivers big on both nature and convenience.

Getting there

Sunbridge Hills Conservation Area and the Caroline Sheridan Logan Memorial Wildlife Area sit just north of downtown St. Joseph, tucked into the city’s edge where pavement fades into forest. The most direct way to reach the main trailhead is by taking I-229 to the Highland Avenue exit, heading east on Highland, then turning north on Huntoon Road. Continue past the River Bluff Trails Park lot and keep going past Cook Road. On your left just after Cook, you’ll spot a small gravel pull-off—that’s your trail access.

If you’d rather start your day at River Bluff Trails Park, you’re in luck. The two areas connect seamlessly. From the River Bluff parking lot, just hop on the northbound trail through the woods and you’ll reach Sunbridge in about half a mile. Whether you’re parking at the official lot or linking in from River Bluffs, the trails are easy to access and well worth the detour into wild terrain.
